Hampton Roads Transit Southside Bus Maintenance Facility & Administrative Building
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Concord Eastridge (CEI) Team envisioned a unique solution to replace HRT’s 100-year old Bus Maintenance Facilities on 18th Street and a separately-located Administration Building on 1500 Monticello Avenue. Working closely with HRT, CEI created a development plan that consolidated HRT’s operational and administrative functions on HRT-owned 18th Street land parcel which is optimally located to serve commuters in the Hampton Roads region.
To make way for construction, HRT vacated the 18th Street site in late Summer 2009 and operated out of a temporary facility during the construction. The administrative departments remained in its former building on 1500 Monticello Avenue. Construction of the Bus Maintenance Facilities started in early Fall 2009 and was completed in May 2011. Construction of the Administration Building started in late 2010 and was completed in April 2012. Both phases of the HRT Project were completed on schedule and on budget. HRT’s employees now have a new home that is a state-of-the-art work environment.
HRT’s new building complex provides enhancement and revitalization to Norfolk’s urban fabric, with improved streetscape including public art and generous pedestrian sidewalks landscaped with native, drought-tolerant plants. HRT and the CEI Team are committed to the principles of sustainable design and incorporated efficient life-cycle-cost strategies during planning stages to minimize energy consumption for ongoing operational needs and to capture renewable resources. The HRT Project is LEED Gold certified. Sample green features include brownfield redevelopment, crush-and-reuse concrete, recycled rainwater harvesting, recycled water for bus wash, and green roof and garden.
